Crochet For Beginners (Wednesday)

CROCHET FOR BEGINNERS

Wednesday 1 May for 4 weeks

Brief Description:
This fun and informal course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. Starting with basic stitches, casting on, and pattern reading, you will complete a mini project.
Progress to flowers, bows and other embellishments and finish the course by starting a traditional crochet afghan blanket using your new found skills. Take your blanket away to complete at your leisure.
There is provision to continue on to an Improvers course.
Course Aims:
• Be able to master the basic stitches
• Be able to produce a swatch
• Be able to read and follow a pattern
• Be able to complete an embellishment
• Use new skills to begin a blanket

Extra Costs:
Learners are required to bring their own materials and equipment.
A small selcetion of wool wil be available to buy on the evening for £2 a ball and crochet hooks for £1.50

What you need to bring to the first session:
4mm & 5mm crochet hooks
Scissors
A wool needle for finishing off
A minimum of two 100g balls of different colour wool*
*Double knitting wool is used in all projects throughout the course. A high quality yarn is required to avoid splitting such as Stylecraft Special DK.

Crochet for Improvers (Wednesday)

 

CROCHET FOR IMPROVERS

Wednesday 5 June for 4 weeks
7.00pm – 9.00pm

Brief Description:
This course is suitable for learners who have either completed the beginners course or have been practicing basic crochet at home. The course will take you through making a crochet teddy bear from scratch using more advanced crochet techniques, such as magic circles. You will complete your cuddly companion with an embroidered face and silky bow.
A kit, containing everything you will need to complete the project, will be provided by the tutor on the first night. Learners are required to pay the tutor direct for the kit.

Course Aims:
• Mastering the magic circle method of casting on
• Be able to work in the round
• Be able to read and follow a pattern
• Be able to increase and decrease
• Be able to sew animal together

Extra Costs:
£6 for the kit, payable to the tutor on the first night.

£6 for project kit, includes a hook.

Flower Arranging for All

FLOWER ARRANGING FOR ALL

Brief Description:
Putting into practice the principles and elements of design. This leisure course is suitable for beginners and those with experience who want to update, expand and practice their existing skills. The course will consist of a variety of different floral designs including traditional, modern oasis and some basic wire work.
Course Aims:
• To introduce and develop flower arranging skills
• To introduce and develop knowledge of flower and foliage varieties
• Create a selection of floral displays for the home and for gifts
• Understand how to care for and maintain items made
• Learn how to prepare and condition materials prior to use

Extra Costs:
Materials are not included. Depending on your budget and where you purchase items, you can expect to spend between £10-£20 per week on all materials.
What you need to bring to the first session:
Apron
Scissors (preferably floristry)
Containers and oasis on a weekly basis
Some materials can be purchased via the tutor and full information on a variety of sources will be given on the first evening.
A list of flowers/foliage/sundries to bring on your first class will be emailed to all learners prior to the first class.

Silver Jewellery

SILVER JEWELLERY

Tuesday 7 May for 10 weeks

Brief Description:
This practical course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to further develop their skills. You will learn to make jewellery, mostly from silver, using basic techniques – cutting, filing, soldering and polishing, riveting and shape forming. You will also study good workshop practice.

More experienced learners will develop their own design and add new techniques, such as texturing.
Tutor is a full time practicing jeweller.

Course Aims:
• Understand the functions of round/half round/snipe/parallel pliers on sheet metal
• Form a circle in sheet to form a ring and setting
• Solder sheet and attachments
• Set a cabouchon stone
• Research and design your own piece in this technique

Extra Costs:
Learners are required to provdie their own materials and equipment. Tutor will advise about any further tools that you may wish to purchase as you progress.

Learners can buy metals from the tutor. Cabouchon - stone and setting pieces provided by tutor at £6.

What you need to bring to the first session:

Small Scale Screen Printing

SMALL SCALE SCREEN PRINTING

Brief Description:
Using tiny screens (up to A5 print size), we will explore a range of printing techniques. Working small can free you up to be very experimental and enables you to try out lots of new ideas quickly.

This is a good course for any beginner who would like to print their own unique textiles, whether it is for clothing, bags, home furnishings, creative embroidery or textile art.

Screen printing is fast, colourful and exciting - so come along with a pile of plain fabrics and create a great stack of printed fabrics by the end of the course.

Course Aims:
• Learn about basic screen printing techniques and equipment for printing on fabric
• Be able to use squeegee to print with
• Learn how to build up patterns or pictures on fabric using a screen
• Gain confidence to start own projects

Extra Costs:
Learners to bring own fabrics and small weekly fee (£2) to be paid to tutor for inks or any other materials used.

A detailed materials list for each week will be given in class.

What you need to bring to the first session:
1 metre of 100% cotton in white, preferably washed and ironed
Notebook and pencil
Sketchbook / reference pictures
A reel of Sellotape brand brown plastic parcel tape (or buy from tutor)
Apron
£2 for materials
It is advisable to wear old clothes.

Watercolour Painting

Brief Description:

This class is taught in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment.  You will explore techniques to create effective pictures by looking at contemporary and traditional styles and subjects.  We also explore other mediums and drawing skills too as a support to water colour.

Suitable for all levels.

Course Aims:

  • ·         Be able to confidently demonstrate watercolour techniques
  • ·         Understand colour use in your artwork
  • ·         Be able to control water use in your artwork
  • ·         Be able to paint a range of subjects
  • ·         Improve drawing skills
  • ·         Be able to show tone and texture and detail in your painting

Learners are required to bring all their own materials and equipment.

Watercolour pad – A3 16inches x 12 inches, 140lbs,

Brushes – Rigger, No 1 brush, No 4 brush, No 6 brush, wash brush

Paints – tubes or half pans.

Suggested colours needed:

Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, Ultra Marine Blue, Light Red, Indigo, Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Raw Umber, Cobalt Blue or any other favourite colours you like to use
