FELTING – CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

Brief Description:

This fun evening is suitable for complete beginners wanting to learn the basic techniques of needle felting with a Christmas vibe.  During the session, you will to create a gorgeous Christmas decoration (or two).

Course Aims:

•    Comparing different types of wool in the make up of your Christmas decoration.
•    How to use a barbed needle
•    Creating your own decoration

Extra Costs:

£5 for materials, to include wool for 2 decorations and 2 needle felting needles, to be paid direct to the tutor on the night.

FLOWER ARRANGING FOR ALL

Wednesday 6 November for 5 weeks

Brief Description:

Putting into practice the principles and elements of design.  This leisure course is suitable for beginners and those with experience who want to update, expand and practice their existing skills.  The course will consist of a variety of different floral designs including traditional, modern oasis and some basic wire work.

Course Aims:

•    To introduce and develop flower arranging skills
•    To introduce and develop knowledge of flower and foliage varieties
•    Create a selection of floral displays for the home and for gifts
•    Understand how to care for and maintain items made
•    Learn how to prepare and condition materials prior to use

Extra Costs:

Materials are not included.  Depending on your budget and where you purchase items, you can expect to spend between £10-£20 per week on all materials.

It is advisable not to purchase any materials until the course is confirmed as running.

What you need to bring to the first session:

Apron
Scissors (preferably floristry)
Containers and oasis on a weekly basis
Some materials can be purchased via the tutor and full information on a variety of sources will be given on the first evening.
A list of flowers/foliage/sundries to bring on your first class will be emailed to all learners prior to the first class.

MINDFUL ORIGAMI PAPER CRANES

Brief Description:

The benefits of the arts on mental health has been widely researched but beginning a creative project can seem daunting at first. Start by taking some much needed time out of your busy life and learn the art of mindful origami and the folds to make the the traditional origami crane. As you learn and repeat the step-by-step folds you will feel relaxed and become aware of throughts coming and going. Japense legend has it that if you make 1000 orgimai cranes you will receive eternal good luck and symbolises resilience and wellbeing.

By the end of the course you will have a collection of cranes to display or give as a gift – it is up to you. Although there will not be quite enough time to make 1000, you’ll certainly be on the path to reaching that goal if you chose to!

Course Aims:

• Introduce the meaning and history of 1000 origami cranes
• Understand the concept of mindful origami and its benefits
• Learn all the folds to make your own cranes by creating your own step-by-step instructions to follow throughout the course and beyond.
• A chance to learn how to string-up and display your cranes with fishing line wire

Extra Costs:

There will be the option of purchasing sheets of paper at 5p per sheet. Nearer to the end of the course you will be able to purchase fishing line wire to string-up your cranes.

It is advisable not to purchase any materials until the course is confirmed as running.

What you need to bring to the first session:

Paper (20 x A4 sheets of printer/copier paper – to create your own step-by-step instructions)

Throughout the course you will need a constant supply of A4 printer/copier paper to continue mindful origami. The paper does not have to be bought new. Re-using any paper / paperwork with your doodles, printed text, images or scribbles which you would be happy to be incorporate into your cranes is encouraged– the paper needs to be free from any obvious folds or creases.

Pen

A4 wallet / folder (to take your step-by-step instructions home).

You’ll need to think of a suitable container to house your cranes as your collection grows week after week. A cardboard box would be suffice.

SILVER JEWELLERY MAKING FOR ALL

Tuesday 24 September for 10 weeks

Brief Description:

This practical course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to further develop their skills. You will learn to design and make jewellery, mostly from silver, using basic techniques. You will also study good workshop practice.

More experienced learners will develop their own design and add new techniques, such as texturing.

Tutor is a full time practicing jeweller.

Course Aims:

• Introduction to materials and techniques
• Learn about different tools and their uses – sawing, sanding & filing
• Use skills to produce a basic piece of silver jewellery – earrings, pendant, chain
• Gain confidence to start own projects at home
Extra Costs:
Learners are required to provdie their own materials and equipment. Tutor will advise about any further tools that you may wish to purchase as you progress. You will be able to buy metals from the tutor.

TEXTILES – MIXED MEDIA

Brief Description:

Fibres, screen print, felting, embroidery, and dyeing of fabrics - are just some of the creative techniques we will be exploring in this class. We will start with some fun design exercises followed by practical workshops with an emphasis on the experimental, layering and discovery. For textile lovers, beginners and experienced, who would like to create their own surface designs on cloth.

Course Aims:

• Explore a variety of textile techniques - dye, print, felting and stitch
• Make a series of experimental samples inspired by spontaneous mark making
• Gain confidence to start textile projects from own designs

Extra Costs:

Materials supplied by tutor will be charged according to use- usually between £2 - £5 depending on that week’s activities. A detailed materials list for each week will be given in class.

It is advisable not to purchase any materials until the course is confirmed as running.

What you need to bring to the first session:

Notebook and pencil
Apron
£2 for materials
2/ 3 Newspapers / plastic to cover table
About 30 - 50 sheets A4 copy paper + any other white / off white paper you may wish to work on.

Bring the following if you have them - the tutor will bring these too if you don’t have them:

mark making tools e.g. old paintbrushes, sponge brush, feathers, old toothbrushes, seed-heads, bits of sponge, rags, string, a variety of sticks etc.
Black Indian ink

It is advisable to wear old clothes.

WATERCOLOUR PAINTING FOR ALL

Brief Description:

This class is taught in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment. You will learn how to strengthen your drawing skills and develop new ways of painting using watercolours, inks and pastels. We will cover a variety of topics and subject matter referring to buildings, landscapes, flowers and still life.
Suitable for all levels.

Course Aims:

• Strengthen drawing skills using scale and proportion.
• Identify tonal values and develop mark making skills.
• Learn how to use watercolours using wet on wet and wet on dry techniques.
• Understand elements of composition.
• Increase knowledge of colour theory and colour mixing

Extra Costs:

Learners are required to bring all their own materials and equipment as advised by the tutor each week.

Watercolour pad –Cold pressed 140lbs 300gms. A3 or 16inches x 12 inches,
Brushes – Rigger, No 4 brush, No 6 brush, No 10 brush, wash/mop brush
Paints – tubes or half pans.
The Winsor and Newton Cotman range is excellent for beginners but the Tutor mainly uses professional watercolour paints.
