WVC Supporting Young Carers

On Young Carers Awareness Day, our Principal Daniel Baxby pledged that WVC would support our young carers in college and at home. The day was marked with a cake stall, selling cakes and biscuits made by our students and cuddly penguins made by Mrs Martin. Then followed a special pizza and chip lunch for these amazing students with Mr Baxby.IMG 6292

The National Day raises awareness of the challenges faced by young carers and campaigns for greater support for them. It is an annual event led by the Carers Trust. Every day across the UK, thousands of young people help to look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol. This can be very isolating, worrying and stressful. For young carers, this can affect their education.

At WVC, we have been running a fortnightly Young Carers Club for many years. The club gives students a chance to have fun, learn a new skill and spend relaxing time with fellow young carers. There is also 1-2-1 support provided fortnightly by Centre 33 within the College.

Mrs Irving-Smith, who is champion for Young Carers and runs the club said, ‘It is a privilege to support such amazing young people, whose roles of caring can be so varied. The care, resilience and empathy that is given on a daily basis at home to those family members in need, is reflected in their behaviour at school, observed in their attitude towards work and friendships.

It is so important to us all at WVC that we continue the support, be able to recognise the signs that help is needed and keep awareness ongoing, incorporating information in lessons, form time, assemblies, fund raising events and contact with parents/carers. I look forward to my continued work with Young Carers in the years to come as it has become a role that has been both humbling and hugely rewarding’.

Our Young Carers are going to the cinema soon as a treat. They have been raising money to do this via their cake stall and one kind parent crocheted some baby blankets and butterflies, which we auctioned. As a college we will continue to support our students in any way that we can.
