Careers Information and Guidance

At Witchford Village College we understand that we have a statutory responsibility to ensure that all pupils in all year groups access quality CEIAG. A standard has been set by the Gatsby Benchmarks (set out below) that as a school we aspire to. Over the next year we will be working towards our “Quality in Careers Standard” accreditation, the nationally recognised award for CEIAG in schools which links in very closely with the Benchmarks. This ensures that all students at every stage receive the same quality of Careers Advice and Guidance.

The Gatsby Benchmarks

Professor Sir John Holman, Advisor in Education at the Gatsby Foundation identified eight benchmarks that are the core dimensions of good careers and enterprise provision in schools. They have a role in raising young people’s aspirations and promoting access to all career pathways as well as enabling all young people to develop the skills and outlook they need to achieve career wellbeing, including adaptability and resilience.

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

The implementation of these benchmarks has been tested over a two year period in a pilot with 16 schools and colleges in the north east of England with very successful results. Every school and college in the pilot now fully achieves at least four benchmarks, where, previously 50% of schools/colleges fully achieved none. All schools and colleges now partially achieve every benchmark. 75% of schools and colleges fully achieve six to eight benchmarks. This is better than any school observed nationally in the original Gatsby report, in which no school fully achieved more than five benchmarks.

What we offer

Effective careers education and guidance has the capacity to make a positive contribution to the well-being of individuals, their families and their communities; aiding social and economic growth. By engaging students, teachers, parents and the local community we aim to enable our students to fulfil their potential and to achieve a successful future.

Employers we work with

On the 1st February 2023 we welcomed in representatives from the local business community - Grovemere, Growth Works, G’s Fresh, Chair of Cambs Chamber of Commerce, Governors an Ex-Governors from WVC, Emerald Frog, Millrose Telecom, Red Shoes Accounting, AIM Apprenticeships and NEACO (Anglia Ruskin University), who offered all of our Year 11 students a one to one mock interview. This experience for students is so invaluable and has been sadly missing in person during the pandemic. Each student had an interview slot and had to complete a “Dream Job” application form, which the interviewer then talked to them about. The students then received verbal feedback and will also have the opportunity for written feedback to. This has given these students a taste of what an interview would feel like and how they present themselves could be the difference between achieving their desired employment or not.

Students commented “It was really helpful and made me think about how to prepare myself”. “I was anxious to take part, but it was really great to talk to different people”.

We can not thank the businesses and individuals enough who gave up their time and shared their expertise. Witchford Village College is always looking for ways to ensure that our students have experiences that will improve outcomes for them in the future and this was such an event.

On the 5th July 2023 we held a Careers Fair. The engagement from businesses was amazing and we were really grateful to have representation from many employment sectors. Students had a booklet that they had to complete when they went around the careers fair - gaining stamps from asking meaningful questions. Employers commented how engaged our students were with the Fair. Feedback we received from students was "It was great to talk to so many different businesses" and "I now have a clearer idea about options for the future".

The Walking Tour of Lancaster Way Business Park is a highlight of the year for Year 8 students. This event has been made possible by engaging through our Enterprise Advisor linking us to businesses on Lancaster Way. Students are able to experience a range of businesses from different sectors. This allows them to understand more about the Labour Market in our area and showcases some amazing opportunities. Due to the proximity of the Business Park we are able to walk our students there in small groups.

How we will keep you informed

At Witchford Village College we want to make sure all parents and carers are fully engaged with the next steps that their child is taking along the route to a future career. We are fully transparent and aim to ensure that you have information every step of the way and welcome any requests from parents/carers for further help.

We will advise you by email using the schools Edulink and In Touch systems of opportunities that become available as well as all important and up and coming dates for your diary. The school will offer events for you to attend with your child that will provide information and advice to assist with decision making. Your child will also be invited to attend events out of school and you will always be notified of what these events are and why they would be beneficial to your child. Our website will be kept fully up to date with relevant information and opportunities for all year groups.

Students are able to request or be referred for an individual guidance meeting and in some circumstances parents may also be in attendance.

Work Experience

After another successful year with work Experience for our Year 10 students we are launching this valuable opportunity for our current Year 10. This will take place from the 4th - 8th March 2024. All our Year 10 will be out in workplaces, whether that is choosing from our Database or finding their own placements. Students have found this really meaningful and allows them to find opportunities that match with their career aspirations and ideas.

The database for students goes live on the 6th November and every student will be issued with a login. All placements and fully Health & Safety checked and risk assessed. A job description is produced so that the student is fully aware of the expectations of the provider. This is an important part of the process and ensures that all students have a structure to their placement and understand the implications of what they can and can not do.

The letter that was sent to all parents and students explains all of the details. Also sent was a copy of the Student Own Placement Form for when students are approaching employers for work experience. For further information please take a look at the Presentation. All these documents can be found below.
